And an Upcoming Novel
Wouldn't it have been nice, I used to think, to be a fly on the wall back in 1924, when Joseph Campbell and Jiddu Krishnamurti had their chance meeting aboard a steam ship? Now I think differently. I'd want my own meeting with each of them. Or at the very least, to have participated in the conversation. Of course, the me that can think those things today is different from the one who first encountered the works of Krishnamurti through his books years ago. He lived to a ripe old age and is preserved in video as a white-haired gentleman from India, who attracted throngs to hear him speak in Ojai, California, back in the day. Many of his talks are available online today, and of course one can read his books. There are many. Or you can get an idea of his life and work in the slideshow below. It's different reading or watching, though. Certainly it must be different from having an actual conversation with a man like Krishnamurti - the way Joseph Campbell did. He said the encounter changed his life. But that does not mean it's impossible to get the message. Krishnamurti is, after all, only one example of what the Buddhists refer to as "fingers pointing to the moon." Check out Slide #8, labeled "Who Am I?" and you will see what I mean.
