Vivien Leigh & Sam Shepard Born This Day. Clips of Blanche DuBois, Scarlett O'Hara, Buried Child & True West
Even though she won two Oscars that celebrate her achievements, it's still hard to believe Vivien Leigh, a British actor born in India, sealed her reputation by playing larger-than-life southern belles. Here are clips from her unforgettable performances in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and Gone with the Wind. No disrespect intended, but must include the Carol Burnett send-up of Wind just for fun.

The Carol Burnett Send-up - Went with the Wind
Born this day in 1943, Sam Shepard must surely have the "right stuff." Playwright, actor, director, and banjo player, the man is amazing. He won the Pulitzer for his play, Buried Child (see clip below), and was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Chuck Yeager in the film version of Tom Wolfe's nonfiction novel, The Right Stuff. He's been on the cover of Newsweek and is a member of the august American Academy of Arts and Letters. His contributions to art and literature include short stories, essays, memoirs. Turning 70 today, he shows no sign of letting up. Not bad for a kid from Illinois who dropped out of agriculture school to become part of a repertory acting group. He's proof positive of what Mark Twain's famous dictum: "I try never to let my schooling interfere with my education." In the second clip, you'll see a very young Gary Sinese partnered with the ageless John Malkovich in True West. Happy birthday, Maestro!
